Journalist Booked On Charges Of Sexually Harassing Sweeper
The accused was also allegedly involved in another sexual harassment incident reported five days ago at a Haritha Hotel in Vontimitta
A 48-year-old woman working as a sweeper at Vontimitta Gram Panchayat lodged a sexual harassment complaint against a man reportedly working as a journalist.
According to police, the woman approached superintendent of police N. Vishwanath alleging that the accused had been harassing her sexually and creating problems in her job after she turned down his advances.
Police said the complaint was forwarded to Vontimitta police station, where a case was registered and investigation initiated.
The accused was also allegedly involved in another sexual harassment incident reported five days ago at a Haritha Hotel in Vontimitta. In that case, the victim reportedly bit his tongue in self-defence, causing serious injury. He is currently undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital.
According to sources the whereabouts of the woman involved in the Haritha Hotel incident were still unknown.
ACB arrests AMC Dy EE, junior asst
Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths on Monday arrested an Anantapur Municipal Corporation deputy executive engineer and a junior assistant for allegedly accepting a ₹25,000 bribe to issue permission for an exhibition.
ACB DSP Prasad Reddy said exhibition organiser R. Raghuprasad Rao approached the bureau after AMC DEE and in-charge municipal health officer Bumannagari Lakshmi Narasimha allegedly demanded ₹30,000 and later agreed for ₹25,000.
Lakshmi Narasimha reportedly directed the organiser to hand over the money to junior assistant A. Sandeep Chowtha. ACB sleuths trapped Sandeep Chowtha while accepting the bribe at the AMC office and later arrested both officials.
They were produced before the Kurnool ACB Court.
4 ganja smugglers get 10-year jail
The First Additional District Sessions Court in Anantapur on Monday sentenced four ganja peddlers to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each.
According to police, Shikari Nagu, Budaga Jangam Narasappa, Mekala Prasad and S.M. Nasir Hussain were arrested by Guntakal One Town police on February 23, 2024, while allegedly selling ganja near Shikari Colony on Alur Road. Police seized 6 kg of ganja from them.
After the charges were proved, Judge C. Satyavani delivered the verdict convicting the accused for illegal transportation and sale of ganja.
Anantapur SP P. Jagadeesh appreciated the police monitoring team and warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in narcotic substance trade.
VRO lands in ACB net
Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials arrested village revenue officer Koppisetti Chitti Babu of Peda Theenarla village in Anakapalle district for allegedly accepting a ₹1.5 lakh bribe from M. Srinivasa Rao.
Officials said the complainant sought mutation of 5.57 acres acquired by Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation for a steel plant project. The VRO allegedly demanded the bribe to process mutation of the remaining 3.43 acres.
ACB sleuths trapped the VRO while allegedly accepting the bribe.
Youth dies by suicide
A 22-year-old youth, R. Mahesh, allegedly died by suicide at Maharajupeta village in Vizianagaram district. Police said he was under depression due to financial problems.
Reports of social boycott over inter-caste marriage fake: DSP
Police have dismissed as fake reports circulating on social media that a family at Uttarapalem village in Veeravasaram mandal of West Godavari district was socially boycotted after a youth entered into an inter-caste marriage.
Raghuveer Vishnu said both families had consented to the marriage and conducted it in the presence of relatives and friends. He added that the bridegroom’s family also hosted a grand reception on Monday attended by invitees.
The DSP said no complaint regarding any social boycott had been received by police. Following the viral posts, police conducted an inquiry and found the reports to be false.
Kakinada street brawl leaves constable dead
Godavari Nageswara Rao, a 46-year-old constable from the 2000 batch of the Andhra Pradesh Special Police (APSP), died following a street fight near Gandhinagar, Kakinada, at midnight on Sunday. A native of Nellipudi village residing in Ramanayyapeta, Nageswara Rao was involved in a physical altercation involving fists that ultimately proved fatal.
Two Town police reported that Ch. Manikanta Kumar was riding his bike near Red Cross Street when he was stopped by an allegedly intoxicated Nageswara Rao. A physical altercation ensued, during which Manikanta Kumar knocked Nageswara Rao to the ground before fleeing the scene. According to police, Manikanta Kumar assumed Nageswara Rao would simply return home and did not realise he had died during the fight.
Two Town circle inspector M. Appala Naidu confirmed that a case has been registered against Manikanta Kumar and an investigation is underway. Forensic teams have gathered evidence from the scene. The deceased, Nageswara Rao, is survived by his wife, Varalakshmi, and two sons—Rahul Yadav, an MBA student, and Harshit Yadav, a B.Sc. student. It was noted that Nageswara Rao, a constable, had been previously suspended for misconduct and had remained off duty for the last 10 days.
43 booked in Almaspet clash; police probe underway
Police have registered cases against 43 youths in connection with the clashes that broke out three days ago in the Almaspet area of Kadapa town. The cases have been booked at the Kadapa Two Town Police Station.
The violence reportedly erupted between Hindu and Muslim youths over flex banners, leading to tensions in the locality. During the incident, a circle inspector sustained serious injuries. According to police, the accused include 26 Muslim youths and 17 youths belonging to the Hindu community. Cases have been registered under around nine sections of law, with some individuals facing two to three cases each.
All the accused have been taken into custody and are being questioned. Police are investigating whether there were any instigators behind the clashes or if the incident occurred spontaneously amid rising tensions. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause and identify any persons who may have deliberately provoked the violence.
4 workers indisposed due to toxic gas VSP thermal plant
Four contract workers of the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), fell unconscious at their workplace (Thermal Power Project) on Monday after they inhaled carbon monoxide gas. They were immediately rushed to a private hospital at Gajuwaka in Vizag city, where their condition was said to be stable.
