Vijayawada: Former chief minister and YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy called it unfair to ask the teachers having 20–25 years of experience in teaching to clear the Teacher Eligibility Test, which involves multiple subjects and the minimum qualifying mark is 60 per cent.

The former CM took to X on Wednesday and pointed out that more than one lakh teachers, who have been working in schools since 2011, are facing serious difficulties, as they have been asked to clear the TET. He underlined that these teachers had been recruited only after clearing the competitive exams held at that time, when TET had not been in existence.

Jagan Mohan Reddy asked how the state government could justify imposition of a qualification with retrospective effect.

He maintained that though the Right to Education Act makes TET mandatory from 2011 onwards, there is merit in the demand from teachers to give them exemption from it, as they have already proved their merit by clearing the competitive exams held during the time of their recruitment. Further, they have been educating students since then.

The former chief minister referred to the involved teachers’ allegation that the compulsory TET is blocking their promotions and also creating uncertainty over their job security.

Jagan Mohan Reddy demanded the state government exert pressure on the central government to exempt all teachers, who had been appointed in 2011, from TET and provide them the long overdue relief.
