KAKINADA: Internal differences within the Jana Sena are surfacing in the Polavaram assembly constituency (ST) of Eluru district, with party MLA Chirri Bala Raju publicly criticising another dominant group of the party within the constituency.
The Karatam family has been in active politics in the area since the 1960s. Karatam Sai is now the Jana Sena state secretary. The Karatam family has been having cordial relations with JS chief and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan even before the latter thought of floating a party and entering politics.
It is said the Karatam family recommended Chirri Bala Raju for JSP’s Polavaram assembly ticket in 2019 and 2024. Bala Raju won as MLA in the 2024 elections. However, in recent times, there have been differences between the Jana Sena with separate groups led by Chirri Bala Raju and Karatam Sai emerging.
Bala Raju has gone on to describe Karatams as “Doralu,” asserting that he would put an end to the “dominance of Doralu.”
Recently, the MLA has gone on record saying he would field his own candidates in upcoming local body elections without the interference of the “other group” and get them elected with a huge majority.
The Karatams, however, have not made any controversial statements against Bala Raju to avoid controversies within the party. Karatam Rambabu of the family has gone on to tell Deccan Chronicle that if the MLA wants to win local body elections for Jana Sena, he (Rambabu) would be very happy, as it would help increase the party’s image in the constituency. However, Jana Sena state secretary Karatam Sai has not said anything on the issue.
