VIJAYAWADA: The Kollipara police in Guntur district arrested an inter-state burglar and recovered stolen gold and silver ornaments worth about ₹16 lakh within 10 days of the crime.
Superintendent of police Vakul Jindal said the accused, Penugonda Mallikarjuna Reddy alias Malli (23), a B.Tech graduate from NTR district, turned to burglary after incurring heavy losses in online cricket betting.
The case was reported on December 19 when a resident of Munnangi village under Kollipara police station limits found his locked house burgled. Gold ornaments weighing 60 gm and ₹5,000 in cash were stolen. Police formed special teams under the supervision of B. Janardhan and Sk Nayab Rasool.
CCTV footage of a masked man riding a motorcycle helped police identify the accused through technical analysis. He was arrested on December 30 and confessed to four burglaries — two in Tenali Rural limits and one each in Medikonduru and Kollipara.
Police recovered 96 gm of gold, 500 gm of silver and ₹5,000 in cash. The SP said the accused targeted locked houses during daytime and had previous theft cases in Telangana.
Jindal advised residents to inform police before leaving homes locked, install CCTV cameras and use Lock House Monitoring System (LHMS) services. He also felicitated the investigation team for their swift action.
