Vijayawada: AP branch of Indian Medical Association has sought intervention of the AP government in resolving the internship issue related to foreign medical students.

IMA president Dr. G. Nanda Kishore and general secretary Dr. M.S.C. Bose have urged Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, special chief secretary (Health) M.T. Krishna Babu and AP Medical Council chairman Dr. D. Srihari Rao to intervene and take corrective measures on this issue.

The IMA called AP’s norms of internship for two to three years as wasting of students’ academic years. The association pointed out that internship is usually allowed only for a year anywhere in the world.

Referring to a letter of the National Medical Commission to Bihar Medical Council that internship and related matters are within the purview of state medical councils, the IMA has urged AO government to come up with the appropriate guidelines keeping in mind the welfare of students.

In this regard, Dr. Nanda Kishore and Dr. Bose pointed out that neighbouring states like Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra, apart from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Haryana, have completed the medical council registration process for students.

The doctors said the same could be done in case of AP medical students too.
