Kakinada: Eluru police will start imposing huge fines on violators of traffic rules from March 1.

Eluru circle inspector (Traffic) Lakshmana Rao said rules will be enforced strictly, including wearing of helmets and seat belts. Heavy fines will be imposed on over speeding, triple riding and not possessing proper licence.

Those without a driving license will have to pay a fine of Rs 5,000. Rs 1,000 each will be the fine for riding without a helmet and triple riding. A penalty of Rs 1,500 awaits those who drive dangerously. It will be Rs 10,000 for the second time.

Lakshmana Rao requested people to carry all relevant documents while moving on their vehicles.

In Kakinada, the district superintendent of police convened a meeting with auto drivers. He cautioned them against carrying passengers more than stipulated capacity or allowing passengers to sit beside them. He warned that auto drivers will face stringent action if they do not follow the safety rules.

However, many of the vehicle drivers, in particular the youth, have brushed away the warning. But there are also some private organisations, who insist that their employees adhere to the rules.

K. Sri Rama Rao, a private employee, said that unless he wears a helmet, the company does not allow him into the factory premises. “This has become a habit. I wear a helmet not only while on duty, but also when going to the market or any other place.
