Visakhapatnam: An 11-year-old BC Hostel student drowned in a pond nearby Kurudu BC Hostel in the Srikakulam district on Sunday evening.

The deceased has been identified as M Durga Prasad (11), a sixth-grade student at Kurudu BC Hostel in Kotabommali, Srikakulam district.

According to the reports, on Sunday evening, Durga Prasad left the hostel premises after playing cricket.

The hostel warden stated that the student was irregular in attending the hostel and often visited his grandmother’s house. They initially assumed he had gone there. When the family was contacted, their phone line was not reachable, the warden added.

On Monday morning, confirmation was received from the family that Durga Prasad never visited his grandmother’s house. A search was then conducted in the nearby areas. During the search, slippers were found near a pond beside the hostel. When searched in the pond, his body was discovered in the pond on Monday morning.

Responding to the incident, the state BC, EWS welfare minister S. Savitha expressed deep shock over the death and directed district BC welfare officials to submit a detailed report on the incident and assured that the government would stand by the bereaved family.
