TIRUPATI: The Hindalco Industries would invest ₹586 crore in Kuppam to build an aluminium extrusion facility that would supply chassis for Apple’s iPhones.

The project, cleared by the state industrial promotion board at its 10th meeting in Amaravati on August 28, would generate 613 jobs over the next four years. Production is targeted to begin by March 2027.

Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, during his visit to Kuppam on Saturday, announced the project and said a blueprint for Rayalaseema’s development was in place. “The investment will not only link Kuppam to Apple’s global supply chain but also mark a step forward in India’s ‘Make in India’ push, with critical iPhone components such as chassis and PCBs now being manufactured within the country,” he said.

He said the development marks a significant step in transforming Kuppam into a centre for innovation and industrial-based growth.

The Hindalco facility, to be approved under the AP Electronics Component Manufacturing Policy 2025–30, would qualify for incentives such as subsidized land. Officials are finalising land allotments and clearances, with the groundbreaking ceremony likely in the next two months.

Strategically placed near the tri-state border, Kuppam is well-connected to Bengaluru and Chennai, giving it an edge in attracting electronics investments. It lies just 120km from Bengaluru’s Devanahalli, where Apple’s partner Foxconn recently opened its second-largest plant outside China.

This proximity, officials say, would strengthen the supply chain and improve logistics for Apple-linked units.

For Hindalco, the Kuppam project is part of a wider expansion. The facility would serve as a model for its upcoming state-of-the-art extrusions plant at Silvassa in western India. India’s aluminium extrusion market, pegged at 3,73,000 tonnes now, is projected to grow to 8,50,000 tonnes by 2030.

With the commissioning of both plants, Hindalco’s extrusion capacity would more than double -- from 60,000 to 1,09,000 tonnes.

The new unit is expected to transform the socio-economic landscape of Kuppam, a backward constituency, by providing it with steady employment and industrial opportunities. Naidu, who has been consistently pushing for industrial and agricultural development in his constituency, said such projects would drive long-term change for the region.
