Heavy downpours have battered several areas across Andhra Pradesh with multiple districts recording exceptional rainfall amounts as the southwest monsoon continues its advance across the Indian subcontinent.

Madanapalle in Annamayya district recorded the highest precipitation at a staggering 5.62 cm, followed by Gudur in Kurnool district with 4.92 cm. Sri Sathya Sai district received 4.82 cm, Annamayya district (4.64 cm), Tirupati (4.0 cm), Chittoor (3.74 cm) and Nandyal (3.52 cm).

Visakhapatnam city, although receiving comparatively less rainfall at 1.9 cm, has experienced widespread waterlogging that submerged roads and low-lying neighbourhoods, causing significant traffic disruptions throughout the urban area. Neighbouring Bheemunipatnam recorded 4.6 cm of rainfall.

Other affected areas include Chintur (0.6 cm) and Kunavaram (1.2 cm) in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district, Nellimarla (1 cm) in Vizianagaram, Paderu (2.4 cm) and Parvathipuram (8.2 cm).

According to IMD Amaravati, the southwest monsoon has further advanced over parts of the south Arabian sea, Maldives, comorin area, south Bay of Bengal and portions of the central and northeast Bay of Bengal.

Weather experts from Skymet indicate that conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon onset over Kerala within the next 3-4 days. A cyclonic circulation is expected to form over the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coast by Thursday (May 22). This is likely to develop into a low-pressure area around May 22, which may intensify as it moves northward.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for the next five days, stating that for the first three days, heavy rain is likely at isolated places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph are expected across these regions.

On the fourth and fifth day, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (40-50 kmph) are likely at isolated places across NCAP and Yanam, SCAP and Rayalaseema.
