Heavy Downpour Inundates Low-Lying Areas in Vizag
No major damage was reported from any part of the city
Visakhapatnam: Heavy rain lashed Visakhapatnam and surrounding areas on Thursday evening, inundating low-lying localities and disrupting normal life.
According to Cyclone Warning Centre Director P.L.N. Murthy, the highest rainfall of 12 cm was recorded in the Meghadrigedda reservoir area, followed by 9 cm at Gopalapatnam. The Airport area, Waltair and Madhurawada received 7 cm to 8 cm of rainfall.
Murthy said Anakapalli and Vizianagaram districts also experienced heavy rainfall. No major damage was reported from any part of the city.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amaravati, said an upper-air cyclonic circulation persists over the southeast Bay of Bengal, while a fresh weather system has formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain across the region for the next four days, beginning Friday.
Man gets 20 years RI for sexually assaulting minor
Visakhapatnam: A Special Pocso Court in Visakhapatnam on Thursday sentenced a 22-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.
The court also imposed a `25,000 fine, directing that `20,000 be paid to the survivor, while ordering the government to provide ₹1 lakh as victim compensation.
According to the prosecution, the offence took place on April 20, 2024, under the limits of Gajuwaka Police Station. The victim's mother lodged a complaint on May 7, 2024.
Police said the accused allegedly forced the child into a house while her mother and elder sister were away at a market and sexually assaulted her before threatening her not to reveal the incident.
After returning home, the family noticed the child was bleeding and took her to hospital. Medical examination confirmed sexual assault, and the child later identified the accused, her brother-in-law, as the offender.
Ex-MLA Mustafa remanded in kidnapping case
KAKINADA: A Nuzvid court on Thursday remanded former Guntur East MLA Sheikh Mohammed Mustafa to 14 days' judicial custody in connection with the alleged kidnapping of the son of a tobacco trader from Koyyalagudem in Eluru district.
Mustafa was arrested by Nuzvid police in Vadodara, Gujarat, two days ago and produced before the First Additional Judicial Magistrate at Nuzvid. He was later shifted to the Nellore Sub-Jail under tight security.
According to police, Mustafa's son Basheer and others allegedly kidnapped Abhi, son of tobacco trader K. Suryachandra, after the trader stopped supplying tobacco to Mustafa's company and began selling it to another firm.
Police said Abhi and others were transporting tobacco bales from Koyyalagudem to Guntur when Basheer and his associates allegedly intercepted their vehicle near Nuzvid.
Based on a complaint lodged by Suryachandra, police registered a case.
Nuzvid DSP Prasad said 10 persons were involved in the case. Seven, including Mustafa, have been arrested, while efforts are under way to apprehend the remaining three accused.
