VIJAYAWADA: Making a plea for governmental assistance of `1 lakh to the family of each brain-dead organ donor, health minister Satyakumar Yadav has said the sacrifices made by such families are deeply inspiring.

In a note to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the minister said such assistance would offer solace to the grieving families while it would encourage organ donation across the state.

He said there were a record 301 organ transplants in AP in 2025, sourced from 93 brain-dead donors. Of these, 69 were men and 24 women. In recent months, the organ donation rate has steadily risen.

The minister recalled that, following the issuance of GO-95 on August 8, 2024, donor funerals were being conducted with official honours. District collectors or senior officials attended the last rites. “Under the Jeevan Daan programme, donor families are also being provided immediate financial assistance of `10,000,” he noted.

Yadav proposed that, based on economic background, one eligible family member could also be offered temporary employment as an additional support.

Organ donations had shown a consistent upward trend over the past decade — rising from 91 organs in 2015 to 210 in 2024, culminating in the 2025 record. Notably, 69 young donors below the age of 30 formed part of this humanitarian endeavour since 2020.

Kidneys account for the largest share of donations, followed by liver, lungs and heart transplants across AP.

In one instance, the parents of a 15-year-old boy from Kurnool district, after he was declared brain-dead following an accident, consented to donate his heart, lungs, liver and kidneys, bringing light into five lives, the minister noted.
