Gurumurthy Seeks IIM For Tirupati
The institute would particularly benefit students from rural areas and economically weaker sections, who often face financial and social barriers in pursuing management education in metro cities. An IIM in Tirupati would also reduce the migration of students to other states for higher studies: Tirupati MP Dr M. Gurumurthy
TIRUPATI: Tirupati MP Dr M. Gurumurthy has urged the Union government to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Tirupati, citing the need to strengthen higher education and promote balanced regional development.
In a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the MP said setting up an IIM in Tirupati would align with the Centre’s policy of expanding premier institutions to new regions and improve access to quality management education for students from Rayalaseema.
He said the institute would particularly benefit students from rural areas and economically weaker sections, who often face financial and social barriers in pursuing management education in metro cities. An IIM in Tirupati would also reduce the migration of students to other states for higher studies.
Highlighting Tirupati’s academic ecosystem, Dr Gurumurthy said the city already hosts several higher educational institutions and has adequate infrastructure and connectivity to support a national-level institute.
He requested the Centre to conduct a feasibility study at the earliest and sought recognition of the proposed institute as an institution of national importance under the IIM Act, 2017. The MP also suggested special admission and scholarship provisions for students from backward and rural backgrounds and expressed hope that the proposal would be considered favourably.
