Grandmother Throws Infant From GGH Ward
Doctors said the infant's condition is stable
ANANTAPUR: A two-month-old infant, who was reported missing from the paediatric ward of the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Anantapur in the early hours of Tuesday, was allegedly thrown from the first floor of the hospital by her grandmother, police and hospital authorities said after an investigation.
According to GGH Superintendent Dr Malleeswari, the infant, the daughter of Poojitha and Ashok Kumar of Mamidakulapalli village in Sri Sathya Sai district, was admitted to the hospital on July 22 after suffering seizures. When the baby was found missing from the ward, family members alerted hospital staff. Security personnel and the hospital outpost police immediately launched a search and traced the infant within about 20 minutes on the hospital premises.
During the preliminary investigation by Anantapur II Town police, it reportedly emerged that the infant's grandmother had allegedly thrown the baby from the ward and later fabricated a story that the child had gone missing, reportedly because the infant was a girl.
The baby was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit and is being treated under the supervision of paediatric specialists. Doctors said the infant's condition is stable.
Police registered a case based on a complaint lodged by the child's mother and handed the infant back to her after completing legal formalities. Following outrage on social media over alleged negligence by hospital staff, District Collector U. Anand sought a detailed report, which concluded that the missing episode had been staged by the infant's grandmother.
