VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh tourism department launched innovative ‘Driver-Cum-Guide’ training programme in partnership with ride-hailing major Rapido is transforming ordinary auto and cab drivers into the state’s cultural ambassadors.

The pilot project was formally launched in Vijayawada on February 24, 2026, on the sidelines of the Visakhapatnam Partnership Summit. Some 280 drivers — including 248 auto drivers and 32 cab drivers — underwent the intensive two-day training at the tourism department’s office in Vijayawada.

The sessions familiarised them with the historical and spiritual significance of destinations such as Amaravati and Nagarjuna Sagar, as well as the Buddhist Circuit. Through a specialised storytelling module supported by Jignasa Artworks, drivers were trained to narrate the stories behind iconic monuments -- in an engaging and memorable manner.

Officials said, “Organised under the guidance of chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and tourism minister Kandula Durgesh, the initiative marks the first such experiment in the country.” The agreement was signed with Rapido co-founder Pawan Guntupalli to skill local drivers as tourism ambassadors.

Durgesh stated that the initiative aimed to convert drivers, who traditionally ferry passengers from one destination to another, into guides capable of narrating the rich history and heritage of Andhra Pradesh.

He said technology integration formed a key component of the training. “Participants were introduced to the Bhashini app and Google Translate to help them interact confidently with international visitors. Lessons in tourist etiquette, safety standards and professional conduct were also imparted,” he said.

The minister said blending the timeless Indian ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava with smart technology, “Andhra Pradesh is steering its tourism sector towards a more personal, immersive and people-driven future.”

To make identification seamless, Rapido has introduced a dedicated Tourist Guide icon on its app, enabling visitors to book certified guide-drivers for a safe and informed experience.

For drivers like K Raju from NTR district, the shift is transformative. “We were drivers until yesterday. Today, we are ambassadors of Vijayawada,” he said, expressing pride in the enhanced respect and opportunities the programme offers.

Implemented under the Centre’s Swadesh Darshan scheme as part of the Challenge-Based Destination Development Programme for Nagarjuna Sagar, the pilot project concludes on March 6. “Encouraged by the overwhelming response, the state plans to expand the initiative to Tirupati and Visakhapatnam,” officials said.
