Vijayawada: A fresh case involving the capture of nearly 15 stray dogs using iron and barbed wires has been reported from Mahadevapuram Colony in Kanuru, under Tadigadapa Municipal limits in Krishna district, allegedly in violation of prescribed animal welfare norms.

The incident comes amid continuing reports across the State of illegal capture and killing of stray dogs, despite an interim order of the Supreme Court directing that dogs be caught humanely, vaccinated against rabies, sterilised under Animal Birth Control (ABC) norms, and relocated only to designated shelters.

According to animal rights activists, the Tadigadapa municipal authorities allegedly engaged private persons to catch stray dogs using iron and barbed wires, causing severe pain and injuries to the animals. One of the dog catchers, identified as Penchalayya from Marturu village, reportedly admitted that he was hired by the municipal authorities.

Activists alleged that, under the guise of relocation, stray dogs were being illegally killed. They further claimed that when the issue was brought to the notice of the municipal commissioner, no action was taken.

The commissioner allegedly stated that he had the authority to relocate stray dogs within his jurisdiction and was not answerable regarding where the dogs were being shifted, animal rights activist Pasumarthi Eeswari said.

Following this, Eeswari lodged a complaint at the Penamaluru police station, seeking an inquiry and strict action against those involved for violating the Supreme Court’s directions and relevant animal protection laws.
