Visakhapatnam:Heavy rains triggered by a cyclonic system inundated villages, damaged homes and infrastructure and disrupted road connectivity across Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR), Parvathipuram Manyam and Vizianagaram districts.

In Parvathipuram Manyam district, floodwaters surrounded Ampili, Annavaram, Gopalapuram, Erakarayapuram and Kondapuram villages in Palakonda mandal. Roads leading to Annavaram were submerged under nearly four feet of water, cutting off access to the affected villages. NDRF personnel and district officials stepped up relief operations, distributing food packets and drinking water to stranded residents.

Heavy rainfall was also reported in Seethampeta and Balijipet mandals, where overflowing streams and canals hampered movement. Uprooted trees blocked several roads. An old banyan tree that fell across the Palakonda-Seethampeta road disrupted traffic for several hours before officials cleared it.

The Gummidigeda river overflowed near Madalingi in Komarada mandal, disrupting vehicular movement. The authorities shifted residents of a rehabilitation village near the Madduvalasa reservoir to safer locations as floodwaters approached their homes.

Officials said inflows into the Janjavathi river rose significantly after heavy rainfall in neighbouring Odisha.

In ASR district, three days of incessant rains caused streams and rivulets to overflow, cutting off dozens of villages. Connectivity to around 20 villages in the D Agraharam area was disrupted. Another 15 villages in Vanchula and Dharakonda panchayats were isolated after a bridge linking Gollapalli and Chamagedda was washed away.

Landslides were reported along ghat roads and national highways in the Koyyuru, Gudem Kotha Veedhi and Paderu regions. Traffic was temporarily halted as mud, rocks and uprooted trees blocked roads. Revenue, police and road maintenance teams deployed machinery to clear the debris and restore connectivity.

The rains also damaged homes in several villages. Mud houses collapsed in Hukumpet and G Madugula mandals, while the boundary wall of a mosque in Hukumpet was brought down.

Meanwhile, the Gosthani, Champavati and Sarada rivers were overflowing. Reservoir authorities released floodwaters from the Jolaput and Duduma projects as water levels neared full capacity.

In Vizianagaram district, floodwaters submerged the Mathuvarayapuram-Kothagudem road in Santhakaviti mandal, cutting off 13 villages. Agricultural fields were also inundated, raising concerns among farmers.

District administrations have placed field teams on alert and are assessing damage to roads, bridges, houses and crops.
