Visakhapatnam: The Indian Railways flagged off the region’s first locomotive equipped with Kavach, an indigenous train collision avoidance system, from the Electric Loco Shed (ELS) here on Tuesday.
The ceremonial flagging off was done by Lalit Bohra, divisional railway manager of Waltair, who inaugurated the station Kavach facility and launched the WAP-7 locomotive. This makes the ELS here the first in East Coast Railway to successfully commission the Kavach technology on locomotives.
Kavach represents a major advancement in railway safety infrastructure. It was designed indigenously.
The system operates by providing real-time signal information (about an approaching train from the opposite direction) directly to locomotive pilots' cabins-- thereby creating an automated safety net that prevents potential accidents.

The technology facilitates seamless data exchange between station interlocking systems and locomotives through secure wireless communication networks.
Strategic placement of RFID tags along railway tracks ensures precise locomotive positioning, enabling the system to monitor and control train movements with a high rate of accuracy.
To support this safety initiative, the ELS here has been allocated 186 locomotive sets equipped with Kavach units for commissioning.
