VISAKHAPATNAM: A major fire broke out at the Machkund Hydropower Project in Odisha’s Koraput district on Saturday, damaging two turbines and disrupting operations at the plant jointly managed by Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

Thick black smoke billowed from the project premises after a suspected short circuit in the turbine room on the second floor triggered the fire, according to sources.

Six workers were trapped briefly inside the plant and were later rescued by employees. Four workers sustained minor burn injuries and were shifted to hospital for treatment.

Fire and emergency service teams rushed to the spot and launched firefighting and rescue operations.

Officials are monitoring the situation closely and assessing the impact of the incident on power generation operations at the project.

Local sources said the incident underlined the importance of strict safety measures and emergency preparedness at industrial and power facilities, particularly in remote regions.
