Kakinada: Farmers in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district staged a protest by sitting inside an irrigation sub-canal at Golakotivaripalem in Kothapeta mandal, demanding immediate release of water to save their crops and nurseries.
The farmers said acute water shortage had left nurseries drying up, raising fears of heavy crop losses. They alleged that despite repeatedly bringing the issue to the notice of officials and political leaders, no action had been taken.
The protesters blamed the alliance government for failing to resolve their long-pending irrigation problems. They also alleged that desilting works on irrigation canals existed only on paper and that no visible improvement had been made to ensure water flow.
The farmers lamented that while governments changed, their problems remained the same. They appealed to the irrigation department to release water immediately and urged MLAs, MPs and ministers to intervene to protect their crops.
