"Face Wash and Go": Innovative Initiative to prevent accidents
Anantapur:Anantapur police have launched an innovative initiative called “Face Wash and Go” to reduce accidents on NH 44, especially during the peak hours of 3-4 am when drivers are prone to sleepiness. Police teams have been stopping vehicles during this time, directing drivers to get out and wash their faces as a simple but effective remedy to combat drowsiness and prevent major accidents on the highway.
The initiative was introduced following three major accidents in Anantapur district that occurred during the early hours. After investigating the reasons behind these mishaps, SP P. Jagadish discovered that drivers were continuing to drive despite feeling sleepy, leading to accidents such as head-on collisions or being struck by other vehicles while crossing from state roads to the national highway.
SP Jagadish, speaking to Deccan Chronicle, emphasized the importance of raising awareness among drivers. He said, "We have directed police stations near National Highway roads to play an active role in educating drivers and providing water for them to wash their faces, helping to prevent accidents."
Police teams are now stationed on NH 44 during the early hours, stopping vehicles and advising drivers to be more mindful, reminding them of the consequences of unsafe driving, and encouraging them to think about the safety of their families. Over 300 drivers, including those of buses, lorries, cars, and trucks, have participated in the "Face Wash and Go" initiative.
SP Jagadish hopes that these small but effective steps will significantly reduce road mishaps during the early hours. He also mentioned that around 164 ATM centers near NH roads are regularly monitored by night beat teams to ensure safety.
