Nellore: The Nellore Municipal Corporation Council will convene an emergency meeting on Thursday to take up and approve Mayor Potluri Sravanthi’s resignation.

The ruling Telugu Desam is now in a comfortable position following a series of defections from the YSRC.

Although the TD failed to win a single seat in the 54-member civic body in the last municipal elections, it later emerged as the dominant force through defections after the party wrested power in the state.

Party leaders attributed the initial electoral setback to the political strategy of YSRC leader and former minister Anil Kumar Yadav and Nellore Rural MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy, who was then with the YSRC.

Subsequently, with the support of senior leaders, including minister P Narayana, the TDP engineered defections of nearly 40 corporators, significantly altering the balance of power in the council.

Though Anil Kumar Yadav briefly jolted the ruling party by bringing back five corporators into the YSRC fold a few days ago, minister Narayana and Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy moved swiftly to facilitate further defections, preventing the YSRC from securing the one-third strength required to stall the no-confidence motion.

In a dramatic twist, Mayor Potluri Sravanthi pre-empted a no-confidence motion by resigning from her post ahead of the scheduled council meeting, denying the ruling party the opportunity to formally unseat her.

With the numbers firmly in TD’s favour, the party is expected to steer the proceedings smoothly during Thursday’s emergency council meeting, marking a decisive shift in the control of Nellore’s civic administration.

Deputy Mayor Roopkumar Yadav, who was officially made as in-charge Mayor after Mayor Sravanthi quit the post, will preside over the emergency council meeting.
