East Godavari Villagers Oppose Proposed Ethanol Plant at Public Hearing
Several residents, however, raised concerns over its potential environmental impact.
Kakinada: Residents of Kanavaram village in Rajanagaram mandal of East Godavari district strongly opposed on Tuesday the proposed establishment of a grain-based ethanol, distillery, and power plant during a public hearing.
Rajamahendravaram revenue divisional officer R. Siva Ramudu, along with joint chief environmental engineer S. Naick and other officials, presided over the hearing related to the ₹300-crore project.
Company representatives said the project would generate employment for nearly 300 youth.
Several residents, however, raised concerns over its potential environmental impact. Farmer V. Sarabha Raju alleged that the proposed unit could lead to air pollution, groundwater contamination, and adverse effects on horticulture and paddy cultivation. He feared residents would face health issues and referred to complaints of foul odour emanating from a similar grain-based ethanol unit at Gokavaram.
Jana Sena leader S. Satish charged that the ethanol plant would deplete groundwater levels in Kanavaram, Chakradwarabandham, Radheyapalem, and neighbouring villages, thereby affecting farmers’ livelihoods.
Company representatives stated that ₹47 crore have been earmarked for health-related initiatives. Some residents questioned the usefulness of such measures in case pollution-related health problems arise in the area.
Tension prevailed during the hearing after some residents alleged that company representatives had obtained signatures from a group of women in support of the project. The allegation led to protests, with some participants tearing up the signed papers and raising slogans against the proposal.
Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board executive engineer I. Suryakala told Deccan Chronicle that residents had strongly opposed the project during the hearing. She said officials would submit their report reflecting the views expressed by the public.
