Vijayawada:Director of Medical Education (DME) Radhika Reddy has directed medical superintendents of government teaching hospitals to submit reports by Monday on the handling of biomedical waste.

The move follows a recent incident in which an amputated leg from a government hospital was allegedly carried away by a stray dog from a biomedical waste storage area. Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav took serious note of the incident and instructed the DME to seek detailed reports.

Medical superintendents have been asked to furnish information on biomedical waste maintenance, transportation, security of storage rooms, and recognition granted by the Pollution Control Board along with its validity period.

They were also directed to provide details on collection and movement of biomedical waste from operation theatres, laboratories and other hospital sections to storage facilities and transport vehicles.

The DME instructed officials to monitor storage rooms through CCTV cameras and ensure strict compliance with the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016. All stakeholders have also been asked to undergo proper training in biomedical waste handling.

Meanwhile, a show-cause notice was issued to a resident medical officer for alleged dereliction of duty, while a notice was also served on the private agency handling biomedical waste.
