Kurnool: A controversy has erupted among ruling party leaders over a plan to include the historic Srisailam temple in the proposed Markapuram district.

Leaders from Markapuram are pushing for the inclusion of the Srisailam mandal in their proposed district, citing proximity and local tribal ties. Leaders from Srisailam and Nandyal have opposed the move. They plan to approach the chief minister to ensure the temple’s current jurisdiction does not change.

The state government is currently considering proposals for changes in district boundaries and mandal jurisdictions.

As part of a campaign, Markapuram Telugu Desam leader Kandula Ramireddy organised a signature drive demanding that Srisailam, home to the revered Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy temple, be included in the new district. He argued that the temple town was closely connected to Markapuram, and retaining it in Nandyal could lead to future disputes over water from the Veligonda and Srisailam projects.

In response, Srisailam MLA Budda Rajasekhar Reddy asserted that the temple has been an integral part of the local region for centuries. He said the issue transcended party lines. He would meet ministers and the CM to convey his views. Other regional leaders are also monitoring developments and are prepared to take a stand based on the government’s final decision.

Meanwhile, social media platforms are abuzz with discussions supporting or opposing the proposal. Many residents and netizens argue that forming new districts should not come at the cost of separating ancient temples from their historic regions. Nandyal’s identity and spiritual importance are closely tied to the Srisailam temple. Shifting it would undermine its sanctity, they argued.
