 Vijayawada: Finance minister Payyavula Keshav on Tuesday said the Rushikonda complex was originally developed by former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for use as his personal residence, resulting in a huge burden on the public exchequer.

Keshav was speaking to the media after a meeting of the cabinet sub-committee constituted to decide on the future utilization of the Rushikonda Palace.

The sub-committee met at the secretariat and held detailed discussions on possible options. Keshav said the government was currently spending between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh every month towards maintenance of the prime facility. Several corporate groups, including Tata, has come forward to use it. Discussions were under way on how the property could be utilised in a viable manner. Some firms expressed an interest in developing it as a hotel.

Tourism minister Kandula Durgesh said the government’s objective was to ensure that the property generated sustainable revenue for the tourism sector.
