KAKINADA: Konaseema district collector R. Mahesh Kumar on Sunday announced that a Crisis Management Committee will be constituted to assess losses and recommend compensation to victims affected by the blowout at ONGC’s Mori-5 oil well at Irusumanda village.

The collector, along with superintendent of police Rahul Meena, Amalapuram MP Ganti Harish Mathur and Razole MLA D. Vara Prasad, inspected the capping operations at the well site. He said the blowout, which occurred on January 5, caused panic in nearby villages but was brought under control with coordinated efforts.
Mahesh Kumar appreciated the cooperation of residents of Irusumanda, Lakkavaram, Gubbalavaripalem and Chintapalli during evacuation, relief and rehabilitation efforts. He said the well has now been permanently capped with soil and the flames fully controlled, allowing people to return to normal life.
The collector said enumeration of crop and property losses is under way and ex gratia payments, along with insurance cover, will be extended to affected families.
MP Harish Mathur and MLA Deva Vara Prasad urged ONGC to ensure timely compensation and asked the company to inform residents within a five-kilometre radius before undertaking any future operations and to follow strict safety measures.
