VISAKHAPATNAM: CPM has warned that a chicken waste mafia within the combined Visakhapatnam district is repurposing this waste into a marketable commodity for fish farming, which would compromise public health.

In a statement on Wednesday, Anakapalli district CPM secretary D. Venkanna pointed out that opportunistic individuals are selling discarded chicken waste, including intestines, heads, and legs, to fish farmers across Visakhapatnam district and neighbouring areas.

While this practice reduces feed costs for farmers and accelerates fish growth in artificial ponds, Venkanna warned that this poses significant health risks. Doctors have indicated that consuming fish that feed on such biological waste increases the likelihood of contracting serious diseases, including cancer.

The CPM leader pointed out that a sting operation conducted by a few individuals uncovered shocking details about this illegal operation. Yet, he expressed concern that police, revenue and fisheries officials have not initiated action in the matter.

Venkanna pointed to the difference between fish growing naturally in habitats like rivers and ponds versus those raised in artificial ponds, where biological waste is used as feed. He pointed out that the mafia has exploited chicken waste to cut costs and boost profits, creating a thriving year-round business at the expense of consumer safety.

The CPM secretary urged authorities to take decisive steps to dismantle the chicken waste mafia and safeguard public health in Visakhapatnam district.
