TIRUPATI: Chittoor district recorded a sharp 26 per cent decline in overall crime in 2025, with total registered cases falling from 7,034 in 2024 to 5,216 in 2025, according to the annual crime report released on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after releasing the report, district superintendent of police Tushar Dudi said strengthened community policing and public cooperation played a key role in maintaining peace and order. He said awareness programmes were conducted regularly, with special focus on women, girl students and cybercrime prevention. To enhance women’s safety, six Shakti Teams were operational across the district.

Crime data showed a mixed trend across categories. Property offences declined marginally from 480 cases in 2024 to 466 in 2025, while bodily offences remained almost unchanged, rising slightly from 857 to 859 cases.

Crimes against women fell from 507 to 443 cases, a decline of 12.63 per cent, with marital-related offences reducing from 280 to 215 cases. Rape cases declined from 10 to seven, while one acid attack was reported during the year.

Cases related to outraging of modesty saw a marginal rise from 217 to 220, while POCSO cases increased from 46 to 56.

Cybercrime cases dropped sharply from 32 in 2024 to 19 in 2025, and economic offences declined from 194 to 152 cases. Narcotics cases remained almost steady at 49 in 2024 and 50 in 2025.

In property crime detection, 426 cases were reported in 2025, of which 207 were detected, registering a detection rate of 48.59 per cent. Property worth `11.52 crore was reported lost, while `8.39 crore was recovered, improving the recovery rate to 73 per cent, compared to 48 per cent in 2024.

On road safety, the district recorded 762 accidents in 2025 against 751 in 2024. Fatal accidents declined from 367 to 354, with deaths reducing from 402 to 381, while non-fatal accidents increased from 384 to 408. Police booked 2,772 drunk-driving cases and collected fines amounting to `27.7 crore. E-challans rose from 54,454 to 74,447, with fine collections increasing from `1.28 crore to `2.31 crore.

During the year, police recovered 1,021 lost and stolen mobile phones worth `2.04 crore and returned them to their owners. In cyber fraud cases, `68.44 lakh was recovered and refunded to victims.

The SP said the use of CCTV cameras, drones, command-and-control centres and Dial-112 quick response systems significantly improved detection, response time and public safety across the district in 2025.
