HYDERABAD: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, at a meeting in Delhi on Saturday, requested Union minister of heavy industries H.D. Kumaraswamy to allocate an additional 800 electric buses (EVs) to Hyderabad under the PM-E Drive scheme. He said the allocation would help the state government strengthen the city's public transportation system and promote sustainable mobility.

The Chief Minister noted that the Centre had recently sanctioned 2,000 electric buses for Hyderabad. Highlighting the growing urban demands and environmental priorities, Revanth Redd requested a further 800 EVs to meet the city’s transportation needs. The Chief Minister also proposed implementing a hybrid global common carrier (GCC) model for operating the buses.

Under this model, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) would operate and maintain the electric fleet using its own drivers and mechanics. Revanth Reddy explained the effectiveness of this approach by citing the retrofitting of diesel buses by the TGSRTC, which are operational in the city.

Revanth Reddy urged Kumaraswamy to consider extending support for retrofitting existing diesel buses as a parallel initiative to expand the city’s green transit infrastructure without fully decommissioning the current fleet. Revanth Reddy said the state government was making efforts to promote eco-friendly transportation and reduce urban pollution, aligning with national objectives of electric mobility.
