Nellore:Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the recent clash between police and a local trader in Podili, directing the Director General of Police to take strict action against those found responsible.

The incident involved a local trader, Avinash, and the town sub-inspector, Vemana. Officials said the dispute first arose on December 24 during the unloading of fertilisers near the trader’s shop, when police asked that the lorry be moved. The following day, amid heavy Christmas traffic, the situation escalated during traffic-clearing operations, leading to a confrontation. Avinash and his family later alleged that the SI assaulted them with a lathi.

The allegations sparked protests by trader associations, who lodged complaints with senior officials. After a preliminary inquiry, the district Superintendent of Police ordered the SI to be placed in VR (waiting for posting) two days ago.

Taking serious note, the Chief Minister held discussions with DGP Harish Kumar Gupta and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha to review the incident and the action taken. The DGP informed the CM that a charge memo had been issued to the SI, his explanation obtained, and that he was shifted to VR based on the preliminary report.

The CM stressed that no official should act in a manner that undermines public dignity and instructed police to exercise restraint and sensitivity while dealing with citizens, particularly traders. He directed a full-fledged investigation and further action based on its findings.

Meanwhile, Social Welfare Minister Dr. Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy condemned the alleged misconduct, said the government acted promptly, and accused the YSR Congress of attempting to stoke caste tensions for political gain despite swift administrative action.
