Clay Ganeshas Gain Momentum in Vizag as Artists Lead Workshops To Make Them

VISAKHAPATNAM: The creation of clay idols of Lord Ganesha is gaining momentum in Visakhapatnam, with artists, civic bodies, and government agencies promoting eco-friendly idols ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi.
Local artists have been organising workshops to teach people how to make idols using clay. At the same time, they are highlighting the environmental impact of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols.
A free craft class titled “Make Your Own Clay Ganesha Fridge Magnet” is attracting participants, with organiser I. Swarnalata encouraging families to adopt clay as a sustainable alternative.

He is providing free coaching to schoolchildren in making clay idols ahead of Vinayaka Chavithi. Ramakrishna said clay idols dissolve in water, while PoP idols pose a threat to aquatic life.
The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board (APPCB), in collaboration with the Lions Club and Walkers Club, distributed clay idols at Shivaji Park and M.V.P. Rythu Bazar on Saturday. Officials, including Prof. V.S.R.K. Prasad and Dr. P. Sandeep, have called on citizens to avoid PoP and adopt sustainable practices.
Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) commissioner Ketan Garg reiterated this appeal at an event in the GVMC head office, where clay idols have been distributed to employees as well as the public.
Officials point out that the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, emphasise on circular economy by prioritising reduction, reuse, and recycling. They said eco-friendly products help conserve resources and reduce waste generation.
ASR joint collector Thirumani Sripooja made a similar appeal in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, urging citizens to worship clay idols to protect water resources. She pointed out that making idols by hand encourages creativity among children while inculcating in them awareness and responsibility towards nature.
The various ongoing initiatives reflect the growing efforts in Visakhapatnam to ensure environment-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
