Vijayawada: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has notified the ‘Rah-Veer’ scheme aimed to encourage, recognise, and reward the Good Samaritans (Rah-Veers).

As part of the scheme, any individual who saves the life of a victim of a serious road accident involving a motor vehicle by providing immediate assistance and ensuring medical treatment within the Golden Hour is eligible. The financial assistance (award) of Rs 25,000 per incident to a Rah-Veer will be given, and a certificate of appreciation accompanies each award. Ten national-level awards annually for the most deserving Rah-Veers, carrying Rs 1 lakh each, along with a certificate and a trophy, will be given. A Rah-Veer may receive awards up to five times in a year.

The selection and implementation of the scheme involve issuing an acknowledgement by the police or hospital, depending on the reporting method or assistance provided, and proposals are reviewed monthly by the district-level appraisal committee. A state-level monitoring committee oversees implementation every quarter. National awardees are selected by a MoRTH Appraisal Committee and honoured during the national road safety month celebrations in New Delhi.
