Visakhapatnam: A bomb threat email sent to Andhra University triggered panic and a massive security response on Thursday, with police, bomb disposal squads and sniffer dog teams conducting an intensive search across the campus, before declaring the alert a hoax.

According to university sources, the threatening email was received at the university’s official email address and claimed that an explosive device had been planted on the premises. Following the alert from the registrar’s office, police swung into action.

Three Town police personnel, along with bomb disposal and dog squads, were deployed and conducted a thorough search of the sprawling campus. Three Town Circle Inspector Paidiah said every corner of the university was checked to ensure the safety of students and staff.

“After a detailed search of the entire campus, no suspicious object was found. The threat has been confirmed as a hoax,” he said.

Visakhapatnam city police commissioner Sankhabrata Bagchi said police acted swiftly after receiving information from the university authorities. “Our teams, including the bomb hoax squad and sniffer dogs, searched the campus thoroughly. Nothing incriminating was detected,” he said.

On tracing the sender, the commissioner said such emails are often spoofed. “In many cases, the mail appears to originate from one address while being sent by another person. We are investigating and will share details later,” he added.

A case has been registered, and police are working to trace the source of the email and identify those responsible for the false threat.
