A massive blast severely destroyed the residence of M.S.N. Murthy, headmaster of the municipal school at Amalapuram in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district during the early hours of Sunday.

The intensity of the explosion blew away windows from their frames, shattered glass fixtures inside the house, and damaged the walls. Flames also engulfed the house, which locals brought under control.

The headmaster lives in a G+1 house. His two sons are software engineers who completed their work on the first floor and slept around 3:30 a.m. It had been raining along with lightning at the time.

Amalapuram DSP T.S.R.K Prasad said as per their initial investigation, electricians have previously advised the house owner to change the old wiring which had been damaged. There had also been an empty gas cylinder on the first floor, along with the inverter. The inverter suddenly exploded and the flames spread rapidly. It is suspected the residual gas in the cylinder had been leaking.

The headmaster’s two sons woke up and rushed out, though suffering mild injuries due to flames and the shattered glass. The DSP said one of the youth has been admitted to a hospital, where he is now safe.

A forensic team has collected samples. The exact cause of the blast would be determined based on lab reports.

Amalapuram police have registered a case.
