BJP Pledges Support for Handloom Weavers
AP BJP president P.V.N. Madhav reaffirmed the party's commitment to reviving the handloom sector and supporting weavers through welfare schemes and market access.
Andhra Pradesh BJP president P.V.N. Madhav on Wednesday said the party was committed to reviving the handloom sector and ensuring the welfare of weavers.
Addressing a programme organised ahead of National Handloom Day, to be observed on August 7, Madhav said both the Central and state governments were giving high priority to promoting the handloom sector. He called for efforts to secure global recognition for International Handloom Day.
Describing handloom as a symbol of India's civilisation, culture and heritage, he said the country's handwoven fabrics had earned India worldwide recognition and contributed to its reputation as the "golden sparrow".
Madhav said handloom represented the soul of Indian art and culture. He alleged that British colonial policies had severely damaged the handloom sector by imposing heavy taxes on weavers and destroying their livelihoods.
Highlighting government support for the sector, he said the Centre was assisting weavers through Mudra loans, Bunkar welfare schemes, improved marketing support and digital platforms. He added that the Andhra Pradesh government was providing ₹25,000 as financial assistance to weavers' families besides offering free power.
Reiterating his appeal, Madhav urged all stakeholders to work towards securing international recognition for Handloom Day.
