Tirupati: A political row erupted within the ruling coalition on Friday after BJP Chandragiri constituency in-charge Medasani Purushottam Naidu levelled corruption allegations against Telugu Desam MLA Pulivarthi Nani and announced a public campaign against him.
Addressing a press conference in Tirupati, Purushottam Naidu accused the Chandragiri MLA of corruption, land grabbing and misuse of power. He alleged that development works in the constituency had come to a standstill and claimed no work could be undertaken without paying bribes.
The BJP leader alleged that, despite being a coalition partner and a contractor, he had been forced to pay Rs 10 lakh every month. He further claimed that commission agents had been appointed in every mandal to collect money.
Purushottam Naidu also alleged that officials were being pressured and that those questioning the MLA's alleged corruption were being targeted.
Announcing a 'Save Chandragiri' campaign, he appealed to political parties, public organisations and youth to join the movement. He also urged TD president and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to expel Pulivarthi Nani from the party.
He said he would submit complaints to the enforcement directorate, the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Lokayukta seeking an inquiry into the MLA's alleged illegal assets and financial irregularities. He also said he would approach the Supreme Court over alleged encroachments of government and private land.
Responding to the allegations, Telugu Desam Tirupati Rural president Eshwar Reddy accused Purushottam Naidu of making politically motivated remarks. He questioned whether Chandragiri MLA Pulivarthi Nani had suddenly become "corrupt" only after Purushottam Naidu allegedly stopped getting earthwork contracts.
Eshwar Reddy alleged that the BJP leader was acting at the behest of YSRC leader Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy and was speaking like a YSRC functionary rather than a coalition partner. He also claimed that Purushottam Naidu had never worked for the coalition alliance and warned that legal action would be initiated if he continued to level what he described as baseless allegations against the MLA.
