VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday commended the performance of the city police for their “prompt and professional” handling of a recent assault case involving a woman.

The prompt police response reaffirmed the city’s strong law-and-order credentials, the CM said and warned that any attempt to politicise such incidents or tarnish the city’s brand image would not be tolerated.

The issue arose as a woman, Vijayadurga, alleged on social media that she had been assaulted and verbally abused by an unidentified man at Jagadamba Centre in Visakhapatnam two days ago. The police launched an immediate investigation and took the accused into custody despite the absence of clear identification details.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused was suffering from mental health issues.

The woman expressed satisfaction over the immediate police response. She visited the police station, verified the mental condition of the accused, and requested that he be admitted to a mental health facility. She urged the police not to pursue legal action against him.

Taking note, the Chief Minister said the incident was evidence of the excellent law-and-order situation in the city. He asserted that the AP Police were firmly committed to public safety and reiterated that Visakhapatnam ranked top among the safest cities for women.

Naidu advised police officials to remain vigilant and warned that any attempt to politicise isolated incidents or tarnish the city’s brand image would not be tolerated.
