Visakhapatnam: Special armed forces and outlawed Maoists exchanged fire near Kakulamamidi village in Koyyuru mandal of Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Monday.

According to ASR police, based on intelligence about Maoist movement in the region, special forces were deployed in Koyyuru mandal on April 27. On Monday around 10.30 a.m., security personnel spotted a group of about 15 Maoists clad in olive-green near Kakulamamidi. The Maoists opened fire, prompting retaliatory fire from police. The Maoists fled, abandoning ammunition, logistics, and technical equipment.

At around 2.30 p.m., the fleeing Maoists were again sighted near Kantavaram village. Another round of firing occurred before the Maoists escaped.

Police recovered an SLR magazine with ammunition, advanced communication devices, a Kindle tab, medicines, and a kit bag.

Senior Maoist leaders including Jagan, company commander Suresh, and AOB Special Zone Committee secretary Uday were reportedly in the squad that passed through Revulakotakanthavaram, approximately 5 km from Palakajeedi in Koyyuru mandal, before the encounter near Kakulamamidi.
