AP’s Coastal Districts to Receive Heavy Rains
The Meteorological Centre has already issued a red alert for Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, Manyam and Vizianagaram districts
Amaravati: A severe cyclonic storm has crossed the coast near Gopalpur in Odisha and is heading northwestwards and weakening, according to the Meteorological Centre in Visakhapatnam.
The impact of the cyclonic storm would continue even after crossing the coast due to which heavy rains might occur in the north coastal districts on Friday, officials said. The Meteorological Centre has already issued a red alert for Srikakulam, Parvathipuram, Manyam and Vizianagaram districts.
As flood water was entering Mahendratanaya, Nagavali, Bahuda and Vamsadhara, the first danger warning was issued at the Gotta barrage in Hira mandal in Srikakulam district. The irrigation department officials opened the gates of Vamsadhara and released water downstream.
The flood flow in Nagavali River is rising at Narayanapuram dam in Burja mandal. The district administration has set up a control room to deal with the situation.
Due to the rains in the upper reaches, the flood level in the Nagavali and Vamsadhara rivers in Parvathipuram Manyam district is increasing. Crops in the river basin areas have been submerged. In the wake of the increasing flood flow in the rivers, In-charge Minister K Atchannaidu has alerted officials. He spoke to the district Collector and SP over phone and advised them to be alert in view of the flood threat.
Atchannaidu clarified that officials should be available round the clock and asked that rescue teams should be ready to deal with the situation. If necessary, people should be evacuated to safe areas. He ordered disaster teams to monitor the situation and wanted to ensure that people do not face any problems with electricity supply.
