VIJAYAWADA: In a move aimed at strengthening road safety and enhancing transparency in the issuance of driving licences, the Transport Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Maruti Suzuki India Limited for automation of driving test tracks at four Regional Transport Office (RTO) locations in the state.

The MoA signing ceremony was held at the Secretariat in Velagapudi in Amaravati. Transport commissioner Manish Kumar Sinha and Tarun Agarwal, Head (CSR) of Maruti Suzuki India Limited, along with senior officials of the automobile major, were present on the occasion.

The project will be implemented under Maruti Suzuki’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative and is designed to make the driving licence testing process more efficient, transparent and standardised through the use of technology. Officials said the initiative would help eliminate subjectivity in testing and ensure that licences are issued strictly on merit.

As part of the agreement, automated driving test tracks will be set up at RTOs in Eluru, Ongole, Vizianagaram and Anakapalli.

Under the MoA, Maruti Suzuki will provide end-to-end support for automation, including supply of technology, integration with the SARATHI driving licence system, training of personnel and routine maintenance for three years from the date of commissioning.

The transport department will facilitate the project by providing necessary infrastructure at existing test tracks, carrying out civil works, ensuring power supply and security, and conducting licence tests through the automated system.
