The Andhra Pradesh government will launch a statewide eye screening programme for 43.3 lakh students aged between six and 18 years studying in government, aided and private schools from July 15.

Health minister Satya Kumar Yadav said on Tuesday that the programme would be conducted jointly by the Health and School Education departments under the National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment.

He said the government aimed to provide free spectacles to 2.5 lakh students identified with vision impairment at an estimated cost of ₹7 crore.

The minister said the initiative was aimed at identifying students with vision problems at an early stage and providing corrective spectacles to help improve their eyesight, enabling them to concentrate better on their studies and enhance their academic performance.
