AP to Conduct Simulation Exercises to Test Disease Outbreak Preparedness
The exercises will simulate real disease outbreaks and assess the response of the health system and other government departments from detection to containment.
Vijayawada:The Andhra Pradesh health department will conduct simulation exercises for the first time to assess the State’s preparedness to respond to public health emergencies arising from disease outbreaks, health and family welfare commissioner K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said on Saturday.
The first phase will focus on leptospirosis in Krishna district on August 18 and 19, followed by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in West Godavari district on August 20 and 21. Similar exercises will subsequently be conducted for dengue in Visakhapatnam, scrub typhus in Vizianagaram and cholera/severe diarrhoeal diseases in Guntur.
The exercises will simulate real disease outbreaks and assess the response of the health system and other government departments from detection to containment. Officials will examine early detection, information flow, investigation, sample collection and testing, availability of medicines and equipment, public communication and inter-departmental coordination.
Unlike routine mock drills that test specific emergency responses, the simulation exercises will assess the performance of the entire response system and identify gaps in surveillance, communication, laboratory coordination, logistics, risk communication and emergency management.
The leptospirosis exercise in Machilipatnam will assess environmental surveillance, information gathering and reporting, logistics and supply systems. The HPAI exercise in Bhimavaram will test inter-departmental coordination, emergency plan implementation and sample collection, packaging and transportation.
The dengue exercise will focus on coordination with the private sector, mosquito surveillance, active case searches and public awareness. The scrub typhus exercise will assess inter-departmental coordination and the functioning of emergency operations centres, while the cholera exercise will examine coordination and water, sanitation and hygiene measures.
The exercises aim to identify coordination gaps, resource shortages and procedural bottlenecks before an actual outbreak occurs and address them to ensure a swift response.
The State IDSP unit, district medical and health officers, district surveillance teams and officials from the Animal Husbandry, Food Safety, Agriculture, Forest, municipal and Panchayat Raj departments will participate. The exercises will follow a One Health approach.
