AP Power Demand Peaks At 290 MU Per Day Amid Rise In Temperatures
Energy minister Ravi Kumar underlined that the government is making efforts to ensure that power cuts are not imposed, whether in urban or the rural areas.
Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh purchased 15,673 million units (MUs) of power worth ₹8,093 crore from April to May this fiscal, compared to 13,485 MUs costing ₹7,063 crore during the corresponding period last year. This is mainly due to increased energy consumption in the state, with several parts of the state recording temperatures 1 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal. Some locations registered temperatures 3 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal between June 1 and September 22. The period coincided with the state recording a nearly 47.5 per cent rainfall deficit. Increase in temperatures and use of air-conditioners and air-coolers by households and commercial establishments contributed to higher energy consumption, according to a report of the AP Transmission Corporation. As per the report, Andhra Pradesh made a net purchase of 7,823 MUs in May 2026, compared to 6,511 MUs in May 2025. Of the power purchased during the current financial year, 6,138 MUs came from the state’s thermal plants, 397 MUs from the hydel projects in AP, 1,863 MUs from central generating stations, 3,123 MUs from independent power producers, 949 MUs from wind, 1,839 MUs from solar, 1,157 MUs from market purchases, and 403 MUs through swapping.
The weighted average cost of power purchased during the current fiscal is ₹5.16 per unit, compared to ₹5.24 per unit during the corresponding period last fiscal.
Energy minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said on Tuesday that under the influence of El Nino, daily power consumption has increased to 290 MUs from 240 MUs during the corresponding period last year. He said the average demand for energy had increased by 20 per cent due to the rise in temperatures.
The minister maintained that despite APGenco generating power at a record level, AP is facing pressure due to increased consumption.
Ravi Kumar underlined that the government is making efforts to ensure that power cuts are not imposed, whether in urban or the rural areas. Steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted supply to consumers. The minister underlined that Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and other states are also facing power shortages.
