Tirupati: Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) on Friday issued notices to several multinational restaurant chains for violating food waste management norms. The municipality separately served notices to two KFC outlets after detecting lapses in ensuring food safety during its inspections across the city.
The inspections had been jointly carried out by MCT Health officer Dr. Yuva Anvesh and officials of Food Safety, Veterinary, and Sanitation departments on the directives of district collector Dr. S. Venkateswar and MCT commissioner Sarada Devi.
While inspecting the KFC outlets in Bhavani Nagar and along AIR Bypass Road, officials found 684 kg and 683 kg of chicken respectively stored on the floor instead of the designated racks. The chicken had been brought from Bengaluru on June 17. But they had turned unhygienic, emitting a foul smell, making them unfit for public consumption, Dr. Anvesh pointed out.
The inspection team found that some food items did not carry the mandatory MRD (Made, Ready, and Discard) labels. Store rooms had not been maintained properly. Water taps leaked, leading to water stagnation near storage areas.
Dr. Anvesh warned that strict action would be taken against establishments that fail to maintain hygiene and quality standards.
As part of their drive, officials also inspected the outlets of Domino’s Pizza at Balaji Colony, Renigunta Road, and Tirumala Bypass Road, McDonald’s on AIR Bypass Road, and Subway on Tirumala Bypass Road. They found these outlets maintaining the prescribed food safety standards and cleanliness.
However, officials have pointed to waste not being properly segregated into wet, dry, and hazardous categories, in violation of the Solid Waste Management Rules. Following this, they issued notices to all the inspected restaurants, directing them to ensure proper waste segregation as per the Solid Waste Management Rules.
Authorities said their inspections will continue. They asked food establishments to ensure quality, hygiene, and waste management standards at all times.
