Vijayawada: The State government has extended the suspension of senior IPS officer P.V. Sunil Kumar for another 180 days, up to February 24, 2026, or until further orders.
Sunil Kumar was originally suspended in March 2025 under Rule 3(1) of the All India Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1969, for undertaking multiple foreign visits without government approval and for deviations from approved travel plans. The Ministry of Home Affairs later confirmed the suspension. Articles of charge were also issued against him, and a Review Committee was constituted to periodically examine the case.
At its latest meeting on August 22, 2025, the Review Committee observed that serious inquiries were pending against the officer. These include an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) investigation into alleged misuse of Agri-Gold relief funds and a criminal case (Cr.No.187/2024) registered at Nagarampalem Police Station over the custodial torture of then MP K. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju. Investigations are still underway to examine witnesses, collect documents, and probe the larger conspiracy behind the custodial torture.
The Committee concluded that revoking suspension at this stage could allow the officer to tamper with evidence and influence the inquiry, given his senior rank in the IPS. Acting on its recommendations, the government ordered the extension of his suspension under Rule 3(8)(d) of the AIS (D\&A) Rules, 1969.
The Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, has been directed to take necessary further action.
