Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has extended his congratulations to Indian chess grandmaster Koneru Humpy for securing the bronze medal at the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Championship 2025 in Doha.

Humpy concluded the tournament with 8.5 points after 11 rounds, tying with Zhu Jiner of China and Aleksandra Goryachkina of Russia. However, she was awarded the bronze after tie-breaks, including Buchholz and opponent ratings, with Goryachkina taking the title following a playoff. A final-round draw against fellow Indian player B. Savitha Shri prevented Humpy from claiming what would have been her third rapid world crown, following victories in 2019 and 2024.

In a message on X, CM Chandrababu Naidu lauded Humpy’s sustained excellence and resilience, stating that her FIDE World Rapid bronze medal is a testament to global-level achievement and a source of inspiration for millions in India. He emphasised that her accomplishments continue to bring pride to the nation.

In the open section, Indian grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi also won a bronze medal, finishing with 9.5 points, behind world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, who secured a record sixth world rapid title. Humpy's bronze is particularly noteworthy, as it makes her the first woman to hold a record five World Rapid medals.
