Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has directed the water resources department to make full use of the heavy inflows into Krishna and Godavari rivers and ensure that all projects and village tanks across the state are filled, with focus on drought-hit Rayalaseema.

Reviewing irrigation works at the secretariat on Monday, Naidu expressed concern over floodwaters flowing into the sea as wastewater. He asked officials to divert the flows through canals into reservoirs and tanks by immediately clearing all bottlenecks. “Only when water reaches farmers does the state benefit,” he stated.

The CM asked officials to assess water requirements of Rayalaseema tanks and expedite the filling of Somasila and Kandaleru reservoirs while channeling supplies to Kuppam, Palamaner, Punganur and Madanapalle. He also stressed the need for long-term groundwater recharge, with current water tables reported at an average depth of 9.92 metres.

On Polavaram, the CM ordered that works on the Left Canal be completed on time, noting that funds were not a problem. He sought speedy progress on North Andhra projects and insisted on linking Vamsadhara, Nagavali, and Champavati rivers.

Water minister Nimmala Ramanaidu and senior officials attended the review meeting.
