Andhra Pradesh Pushes for EVs With 5% Subsidy Across Board, Five-Year Road Tax Waiver

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh government is pushing for electric vehicles (EVs), offering subsidy for their purchase and other incentives, transport minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy announced on Wednesday
The push is part of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy 2024–29 to encourage both EV manufacturers and consumers.
Under the policy, buyers of electric two-wheelers, autos, buses, transport vehicles, and tractors will be eligible for an incentive of up to 5 per cent of the ex-showroom price. The incentive will, however, be available until March 2027, the transport minister clarified.
Further, the government has exempted EVs registered in the state from payment of road tax for five years. The move is aimed at encouraging more people to shift from conventional to EV vehicles.
To address charging concerns, incentives of up to 25 per cent of the installation cost, subject to a maximum of ₹3 lakh, are being offered for setting up the first 5,000 charging stations across Andhra Pradesh.
Pointing to the growing popularity of EVs nationally, Ramprasad Reddy said around 2.98 lakh EVs have been sold across India in August, registering a 52.9 per cent year-on-year growth. Their share in the overall vehicle market increased from 9.5 per cent to 12.3 per cent.
The minister said AP has set a target of promoting 2 lakh electric two-wheelers, at least 10,000 three-wheelers, and 20,000 new electric cars by 2029, besides promoting EV use for public transport.
Ramprasad Reddy said the state government’s aim is to establish a charging station every 30 km, develop e-mobility cities, and support EV-related startups. The overall aim is to make AP’s coalition government a national leader in electric mobility, he asserted.
