Tirupati: A physical education teacher (PET) at the Zilla Parishad High School for girls in Kota in Tirupati district was suspended after several students fell ill following a punishment related to uniform violations.

According to officials, PET S.K. Mabasha allegedly made about 70 girl students perform squats as punishment for not wearing full white uniforms. Many of them later complained of severe leg pain and weakness. Some students were reportedly unable to walk and were shifted to the local area hospital for treatment.

The incident led to concern among parents, who gathered at the hospital in large numbers. Tension prevailed until senior police officials, including DSP Geetha Kumari, visited the hospital. She spoke with the students and their families and assured them that appropriate action would be taken. The DSP also directed hospital staff to ensure proper medical care.

Based on preliminary findings, the district education officer suspended the PET and ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. The teacher was instructed to remain at the headquarters until the investigation concludes. Meanwhile, police confirmed that a case has been registered and the PET has been taken into custody for further questioning.

Gudur MLA Pasam Sunil Kumar on Sunday visited the students at the hospital and met with their parents. Speaking to the media, he said that legal action had been initiated and additional cases would be filed if necessary. The MLA urged teaching staff to take collective responsibility and avoid such incidents in the future. “No student should be subjected to such punishment,” he added.
