Andhra Pradesh Monsoon Delayed; May Set in Over State Around June 7
The original schedule of monsoon setting in over Kerala is June 1. It had earlier been predicted that the monsoon would set in early on May 26.
Visakhapatnam: Southwest Monsoon, now delayed beyond the scheduled date, might set in over Andhra Pradesh by June 7 or June 8, senior scientist at IMD Amaravati Dr. S. Karunasagar has disclosed.
He explained that conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon into some more parts of southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep Islands, some parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, some more parts of southwest, west central, east central, and northeast Bay of Bengal, and remaining parts of southeast Bay of Bengal during next 4–5 days.
The original schedule of monsoon setting in over Kerala is June 1. It had earlier been predicted that the monsoon would set in early on May 26.
Citing reasons for the delay, Karunasagar said the parameters that decide the onset of monsoon have not met the required criteria. The wind pattern has not been satisfactory and so is the outgoing long-wave radiation. The prolonged hot and dry spells, and the break in pre-monsoon rain spell, have affected the arrival of monsoon.
The Met office has tied the delayed monsoon to the influence of El Niño, a climate pattern that messes ocean temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. That can affect weather systems across various countries, including India.
During El Niño years, the monsoon winds may weaken or move slower than usual. When that happens, rain can drop off and the arrival of clouds that carry rain over the Indian subcontinent may get pushed back. Officials say this kind of behaviour is already being observed during the ongoing monsoon season.
Though the IMD had predicted a weak monsoon, Karunasagar maintains that AP would have normal rainfall with two or more districts facing a deficit rainfall during the four-month monsoon period.
